The Plymouth Post Office will be closed Saturday, February 9 , 2013. There will be no route delivery on Saturday either, due to weather conditions. Open at 8 am on Monday.

Cold weather & the fact we have had no significant accumulation of snow lately hasn’t kept folks from enjoying some time outdoors! Melissa & Chris had Owen out on his skis at Okemo briefly yesterday. I wonder what the warm-up in temps will do to the snow this week! I have heard from folks who have retreated for a time to FL & AZ who report cooler than normal temps, too.

This coming weekend consider some outside activities at Bethany Birches Camp. On Sunday, 2/3, they will be having their Family Fun Day, when all ages are encouraged to participate. It will take place from 12:30 through 4:30 PM with skating, tubing, & trekking along the trails. There will be goodies & fun for all!

For your information, Tyson Church will be having an Ash Wed service on Feb 13th at 6:00 PM. I am already working on the Lenten series, so we hope that folks will join us.

Activities for All Ages Feb. 23 at Coolidge Museum and Education Center

Mark your calendars for the first “Family Day” on February 23 at the President Calvin Coolidge Museum and Education Center in Plymouth Notch, VT. Sponsored by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation in cooperation with the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation, a variety of activities will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors of all ages can explore the museum exhibits: More Than Two Words and Gone Fishin’ with the President. Hands-on activities will be ongoing in the classroom. Visitors can make small diaries, just like the ones Calvin and his sister Abbie used, and read some samples of what they wrote in their diaries. Try out ink pens, handle artifacts from Coolidge’s time, see photographs of President Coolidge’s Inauguration, and have your picture taken with the President and Mrs. Coolidge.

There will be old-time movie shorts shown in the Fireplace Room and at 1:00 Bill Jenney will give us a preview of the upcoming Baseball Exhibit. Explore the wintry village, try to solve the Coolidge Quest, and stop in at the Plymouth Cheese Factory. Suggested donation is $10 per family.

Dry Hydrant Complete on Dead End Road

The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department has completed the repairs of a dry hydrant on Dead End Road that was damaged by Tropical Storm Irene. The repair of this dry hydrant is part of a comprehensive program to improve and maintain fire protection in Plymouth. This is the last hydrant that needed to be repaired for damages caused by Tropical Storm Irene.

The Fire Department is continuously improving fire protection in Plymouth by installing and maintaining dry hydrants to improve the availability and accessibility of water for firefighting purposes. The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force through the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council provided assistance to the Fire Department in developing a plan to improve water supply in Plymouth.

The Vermont Legislature approved appropriations to assist communities in installing dry hydrants to improve fire protection in the rural area of Vermont. Additionally, in 2012 special funds were available to help repair hydrants damaged by Irene. The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force with the assistance of the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council administers the grant program.

Dry hydrants are a preferred method of providing water for’ firefighting in areas where there are no water mains. A dry hydrant consists of a 6 to 8 inch pipe with a fitting to which a pump/ tanker truck can attach. The pipe connects to a water source (Pond or stream) that can supply at least 60,000 gallons under drought conditions.

This is but one example of the service your fire department provides in preparation for the next alarm.

Cold, cold, cold but at least those wind gusts have subsided! This month seems to be moving along quickly & already the daylight hours are noticeably longer, which is always encouraging.

I have noticed a multitude of squirrels in our yard & also 3 male turkeys seem to be gleaning some fallen seed from our bird feeder. Shirley & Bob Billings have been gathering squirrels in a “have a heart” trap to disperse them elsewhere, but a bobcat thought that might be an easy meal when he was wandering through their yard. Catching a glimpse of this elusive creature is something that I have been longing to do!

Just a reminder that Worship is continuing at Tyson Church & I was actually able to attend yesterday. Please note that a telephone has been installed & the answering machine is being checked regularly. The number is 228-4770.

The changes at the Plymouth Post Office will begin 1/28/13 with the new window hours being from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM & from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, on Monday through Friday. On Sat. the hours are 8:00 AM until noon. There will be no changes in delivery & the lobby will open to PO Box holders from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, M-F.

Hope the rain & resulting ice did not cause a problem for folks. Still plenty of snow out there for winter activities & I must admit I looked at our winter wonderland with longing to be out on my snowshoes!

Trying to get back to doing some things again & thought the column might be a good place to start, even though chemo may be starting shortly! Thanks for so many cards & well-wishes – even received a lovely note from VT Standard reader from Hartsdale, NY!

For those of you who are interested, The Thief of Auschwitz by local author Jon Clinch will be in bookstores, but is also available online in paper & electronic formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, & Kobo. (Bonus: If you’re using a Kobo reader that you bought from your local independent bookseller, a little bit of what you spend will go straight back to your own neighborhood.

Condolences to the family of Betty Larabee of Tyson who passed away on 1/6 after a long period of declining health.

The Reach Out Luncheon will be this Thursday downstairs at Tyson Church. Sorry that I am a bit out of the loop, so I don’t know the menu or the speaker, but they meet at 11:00 & always have a wonderful meal & an interesting speaker.

There was an Historical Society meeting this past Sunday where all of the accomplishments of the past year were noted. The society is currently planning a move to the front room of the elementary school where it will have more space for exhibits, better lighting, internet access and year round accessibility. The goals for 2013 include:
1. continue with improvements to the new quarters at the school with a grand re-opening hopefully in June
2. begin to catalog assets
3. plan programs on lime/potash kilns, gold mining (showcasing newly acquired, exquisite 1887 “lantern slide” prints, courtesy of Melissa Lynds), historic site tour of Plymouth, and a showing of images from the Claflin plate glass negatives
4. investigate moving the Pinney Hollow monument on Rt. 100A to a safer and more suitable location

The first 2013 meeting of the Plymouth Vermont Historical Society will be held at 4:15 PM on Sunday, January 13th at the Plymouth Town Hall. Items to be discussed include a summary of 2012, 2013 membership drive, the anticipated move to the old Plymouth Elementary School, a new website for PVHS, program ideas for 2013, recent acquisitions, digitizing assets, and potential grant monies.
