More nice weather this weekend & judging by the crowds, lots of folks came to VT to enjoy it! We were at the Echo lake Inn for dinner on Sat evening & had a wonderful meal. The dining room will be closing after this weekend & reopening for Thanksgiving.

Tina & Bruce at the Inn at Water’s Edge are still having their $25 dinner special on Thursday evenings. The choices for this week are: grilled hanger steak with green herb sauce, chicken breast with Marsala, spinach, & fontina cheese, plus oil, garlic & lemon salmon with arugula. Be sure to make a reservation at 228-8143 to enjoy one of these wonderful meals & a glass of wine.

Don’t forget that we are into hunting season now. Tyler Pollender-Savery shot a 5 point buck this past week. Bow & arrow for deer continues through 10/27, with Youth Deer Weekend being 11/9-11/10. Regular deer season is 11/16- 12/1. Black bear season goes through 11/15 & the early turkey season goes from 11/16 – 11/24. For a complete list go to

How exciting that Emily DuPont (an 8th grader at WUMS) & four of her friends from the Vermont Center for Dance Education auditioned & have been selected to be part of the Albany Berkshire Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker at The Paramount in Rutland on December 22nd. They are cast as soldiers, but they are also auditioning for the pointe shoe part of angels. Good luck!

Ian Dupont is participating in the Farm to School program, an extension of his working in the school garden this past summer. I see that Holli Olsen is adding her talent to the Girls Field Hockey team. I am sure that are many more interesting things happening in the lives of the other young people in town. Please let me know, so they can be included & cheered on!

Wonderful news that Kathy & Bob Lynds’ daughter, Elizabeth Howes & her husband David of Bally PA. completed the adoption of 6 year old Matthew on 10/2. He has been with them for some time & his official name is now Matthew Wynn Howes.

A last reminder about the Melissa Maravell concert at 7:00 PM at Tyson church on Friday, 10/18. The church is located at 39 Dublin Rd, right off Rte 100, across from the Echo Lake Inn. The concert is free, but donations are welcome & will be applied to community outreach. Refreshments will be served & we are handicapped accessible.

One of the projects that the church is sponsoring is the We Can Make a Difference program to gather School & Baby Kits for Church World Service. We appreciate the community support & will have at least 15 school & 5 baby kits, to be assembled on Sat, 10/26 at 10:00 AM downstairs at the church. We would especially like to have the young people in our area join us as we put them together & ready them for mailing.

Well, the leaves are falling quickly, so I hope there are some left for those visitors to our area who will coming up for the holiday weekend! The Coolidge Foundation’s 3rd Grace Coolidge Musicale will take place at the Historic Site Sunday, 10/13, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, featuring a four hands piano program with Susan Cobb & Abigail Charbonneau. Refreshments will be served at the Wilder House following the performance.

Many places will be closing on 10/14, including our two State parks – Coolidge & Camp Plymouth. The Plymouth Cheese Factory, founded by Calvin Coolidge’s father, John will be open from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM daily until the Historic Site closes for the season, then the hours will be reduced.

Nancy at the Wilder House wants to thank everyone for their patronage. They will remain open until 10/28, so there is still time to stop in & sample their yummy food!

According to Brandon, the Bethany Birches Camp Auction raised $56,000 this year. As usual, former campers came to assist with distribution & counselors & other staff were on hand as well. For those of you unfamiliar with the camp, they emphasis the love of God & a large number of the camperships (summer & winter) are subsidized. Some of the funds will also go toward their ambitious campaign for the new pavilion, which will allow for more activities in any weather. Donations are always needed & greatly appreciated. Tyson Church is excited about the We Can Make A Difference initiative to provide Kid‘s School Kits & Baby Care kits for Church World Services. A list of what is needed is noted in the Area Briefs or contact June Capron at 802-259-3473 or junecapron or Margo Marrone at tmmarrone for more details about how you can participate. There will be a meeting downstairs at the church on Friday 10/11 at 4:30 to assess how we are doing!

Part of the proceeds from the Melissa Maravell concert will be used for this outreach project & donated items can be brought with you to the concert at Tyson Church (across from the Echo Lake Inn) at 7:00 PM on Friday, 10/18. It should be a wonderful evening of music & refreshments will be served.

What a wonderful celebration at the Historical Society Open House on
Sunday! The exhibits were wonderful, even though I understand they are
not complete yet, as there are boxes of artifacts still to be unpacked.
The Walter B Claflin slide show was so interesting & the large crowd
that attended was able to provide insight into some of the homes &
buildings. It was wonderful to see so many people there to acknowledge
the hard work of the volunteers & to take such an interest in our town
history.

Most of us did not know anything about Walter B Claflin, but apparently
he & his wife, Bell were residents of Plymouth, living in what later
became known as the Hutchinson House on the Kingdom Rd in Tyson. Betty
Jarvi had donated the negatives that were then transformed into this
wonderful slide presentation. One of the connections was likely that
Betty & Bell were both members of Tyson Ladies Aid.

Bill Jarvi & daughters, Kristen & Lauren (along with son-n-law Lenny)
were on hand for this dedication to Betty & were able to clarify some of
the locations in the pictures. There is also a Resource section in
Betty’s honor.

A print of a Rook’s Mining Company map was used as a fund-raiser. The
highest bidders were Claire King & Roger Calrsten of 94 Library Rd
(formerly known as Liberty Hall). They were so pleased to have this
piece of history of the area & know that their children will excited to
see it. Funds & volunteers are always needed. Check out the website:

A special tribute to the late Betty Jarvi, who donated the negatives, will highlight the event. The museum’s newly expanded exhibits await visitors and future donated artifacts.

PLYMOUTH SELECTBOARD NEWS – September 2013

• Flood mitigation buyouts—Bids are being requested for demolition of the three properties purchased by the town through FEMA. Demolition should start in October.

• A safety monitoring system has been installed in the Town Hall.

• Several town roads have changed status in response to resident petitions and a public hearing in May. See a SB member or the Town Clerk for details.

• The Town will be receiving money from FEMA for an alternate project to redo a bridge on Hale Hollow. Hopefully there will be money left over to construct the foot bridge on the Library Trail.

• The town has hired a community activities coordinator, Terry Bascom, who has set up a community activities calendar, and is scheduling events at the school building. Please visit the site online!!

• The town is purchasing a new truck which should be available this winter.

• The town has received reimbursement for all but one “Irene” project and that should be completed this fall.

• We are hoping the CCC road to Shrewsbury will be open before winter!

• The Selectboard meets the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 6:00 PM, unless a special meeting is called.

Today is Sunday, a crisp sunny day after some heavy downpours & brisk wind during the week. The sun is shining brightly & it feels good to sit outside & reflect. This is especially true as we see the plight of those folks awash in floods in CO. After our experience with “Irene“, the horror of it seems more real. Oh, may the rains stop…..

Speaking of tough situations, Willow Bascom will be leading “Living Well with Chronic Illness” at the former Plymouth Elementary School on Thursdays from 9/26 – 11/21. The group will pursue effective coping skills to deal with ongoing health issues & the limitations that often accompany them. Feel free to call Willow (672-5390) to discuss the program & help determine the best time to meet. The cost is $20 for the book & $5 per class.

Mark your calendar for the Plymouth Cheese & Harvest Festival at the Historic Site on Sat 9/21, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Come enjoy sampling various VT cheeses & tour the Plymouth Cheese Factory. There will also be craft demonstrations, wagon rides, live music, & more. Vintage automobiles will be on display from 1:30 – 3:30. I understand there will also be some yummy pumpkin goodies at the Wilder House! For my info, call 672-3773.

On-line bidding is open for the Bethany Birches auction, which will take place Saturday, 9/28 at the Camp on Lynds Hill. It is such a lovely place, plan to actually attend this fundraising event. Coffee & donuts will be served between 9:00 & 10:00 AM while you preview the items.

A reminder about the collection for Church World Service kits that Tyson Church is undertaking. For the Baby Care Kits: cloth diapers, baby wash clothes, or receiving blankets are needed. For the School Kits: pencils with erasers, hand held pencil sharpeners, or individual boxes of 24 crayons. The drop-off places are: the Plymouth Town Office, Green Mountain Sugar House, or the church on Sunday mornings from 9/23-10/7. If you would prefer a monetary gift, so we can purchase items, checks may be made out to Tyson Church, but earmarked CWS & sent to 39 Dublin Rd, Ludlow, 05149. Join us for a Plein-Aire Painting Session in Oils with Robert Sydorowich at the scenic Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site on Saturday, September 28 at 10:30.

The painting *demo* (bringing your own supplies is optional) is limited to 8 people and will last about 1 hour. Rain (we’ll paint inside looking out) or Shine. $30 includes admission to the Coolidge Site. You’re welcome to stay longer to paint or tour the site.

I was having a little chat with one of our hummingbirds the other day, acknowledging the nip in the air & the probability of her departure for warmer places. This flighty little creature was resting uncharacteristically on the railing of our deck, a few inches from the feeder & she remained there, seeming to be “listening” to me. Well, I think it was a farewell for this year, since the feeders have remained untouched for 2 days now. Friends, feathered & otherwise, are sometimes only here for a season, so we should enjoy them while we can!

Speaking of enjoyment, more wonderful food at the Inn at Waters Edge. Thursday 9/12 is Italian night featuring their $25.00 dinner w/one glass of wine. The menu is as follows: Veal Marsala, Pan Seared Shrimp & Pancetta with Polenta or Roasted Cornish Game Hens with Orange, Fig & Rosemary Glaze. Another scrumptious offering is a Friday Night Special: of a 4-Course $30.00 dinner featuring: Grilled Hanger Steaks, Red Snapper w/mustard & caper sauce or Chicken Breast w/mushrooms, spinach & fontina cheese. I don’t know if folks are aware that our little Tyson Library (erroneously listed as being in Ludlow in a recent NPR program) has passes that can be used for free admission to VT State Parks & Historic Places, such as the Coolidge Homestead. They admit up to 8 people in a vehicle or 8 people to historic sites. There is also a Billings Farm family pass for two adults & two children. The library is open Tues – Sat from 10:00 – noon for the time-being.

The initial meeting of the Together We Can Make a Difference project was held on 9/5 at Tyson Church & folks were excited about assembling Church World Service Baby Care Kits & School Kits for distribution both abroad & in the USA. CWS is a cooperative ministry involving over 30 different denominations (of which the UCC is a part) that was started in 1946 in the aftermath of WW II to provide sustainable self-help, development, disaster relief, & refugee assistance around the world. Past distributions have included Africa, the Middle East, & many other disaster & impoverished areas. Donations may be monetary or one or more of these specific new items can be purchased. For the Baby Care Kits: cloth diapers, baby wash clothes, or receiving blankets. For the School Kits: pencils with erasers, hand held pencil sharpeners, or individual boxes of 24 crayons.
