Kids Can Move and Groove at Coolidge October 8

From Diane Kemble, Coolidge Foundation Education Director

Moving and Grooving with the Past
October 8, 9AM-1PM
Moving and Grooving with the Past is a special opportunity on October 8 for imaginative kids from age 7 to 12 who like to move and make up plays of their own. We’ll explore beautiful Plymouth Notch, Vermont, where a little boy named Calvin grew up to be President. Then we’ll bring stories to life through movement, improvisation, and play. Create original works of art while exploring history!

Ashley Hensel-Browning will lead the day’s activities, which go from 9 to 1. Ashley is a dancer, choreographer, and teaching artist who enjoys dancing in schools, studios, theaters, and the great outdoors throughout New England.

Families are welcome to stay and tour the site, enjoy the outdoors, visit the Wilder House Restaurant or bring a picnic. There may even be a brief performance at the end!

For information and to sign up, contact education or 802-672-3389 ext. 3

Cost is $10 and students should bring a lunch.

Meet at the new Education Center at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, 3780 Rt. 100A in Plymouth, VT.

Margo Marrone’s Plymouth Report – 9/26/11

Reprinted with permission from the Vermont Standard
9/26/11

Today is Monday & such a lovely day. It is a reminder to be aware of the beauty around us – to focus on the positive & not be dragged down by the restoration work that still remains to be done. Actually, during our Healing Circle yesterday, we prayed for all those who are still dealing with the lingering effects of “Irene” & for the spirit of camaraderie within town to continue. What amazing work has been done in rebuilding & also in helping one another in a myriad of ways. We are resilient & caring people!

Many thanks to the Woodstock Food Shelf for providing funds to help stock the Plymouth Recovery Center Food Shelf. Julie, Ian, & Emily DuPont, along with Kathy Lynds went shopping in West Lebanon on Sunday for food & other supplies. That means there will be a good selection on hand at the Center, not only for those who experienced significant flood damage, but for the many people who lost time from work or have had additional expenses of late.

We had so much fun with Jim Marquis at the Antique Appraisal at Tyson Church last week. He is quite a showman & very knowledgeable. The turnout was a bit disappointing, but even with uncertain travel & a light drizzle, we were able to raise some money for hurricane relief. Jim would like to come back again next summer & many of us will be anxious to bring more items to learn their worth & hear about their history. I will keep you posted!

Don’t forget the other fundraising events coming up:
Saturday, 10/1 – complimentary BBQ & entertainment sponsored by Hawk Inn & Mountain Resort for the Town of Plymouth. It will take place in their tent from noon to 4:00 PM & any donations that are received will go to help meet the needs of those who are experiencing hardship as a result of hurricane Irene.
Saturday, 10/15 – benefit concert hosted by The Historic Site & Calvin Coolidge Foundation from noon to 5 PM. Performers include: Bread and Bones, Jim Gilmour, Phil Henry, Jay Ottaway, Bonnie Waters, & HUNGRYTOWN. Again, Jay has lined up some great talent.

Also, spread the word that the Historic Site is now open, so that folks will know they can again visit us in Plymouth! In speaking with Nancy at Wilder House, they are now in full operation, 7 days/wk from 9:00 – 4:00 & will be through 11/2.

Plymouth Historical Society Thanks Hawk Inn and Mountain Resort

From Betsy Tonkin, Secretary, Plymouth Historical Society

The Plymouth Historical Society wishes to express its gratitude and say thank you to Kathy Calvin, Resort Manager, and Jim Neilson, both of Hawk Inn and Mountain Resort, for displaying and selling twelve Plymouth Historical Society commemorative water bottles honoring Plymouth’s 250th anniversary. The resort’s efforts on the society’s behalf resulted not only in a significant contribution to its coffers ($120) but also demonstrated graciousness in collaborating with the Plymouth community. Their magnanimous gesture was even nobler in light of our recent disaster. As Michael Clarke, Hawk resident and historical society member, so aptly put it, they were “giving from the heart as its own was pained.”

As we continue the recovery and the town works towards adjusting to the many changes imposed by the ravages of the flood, the Historical Society will be reevaluating its endeavors as well. However, the sale of the water bottle souvenirs will support the ongoing goal of maintaining and displaying the many acquisitions in the museum and providing future programs of historical interest.

Many thanks, again to Hawk for their assistance. Hopefully the bottles were put to good use and the purchasers returned home with fond memories of Plymouth and Hawk Mountain Resort.
