Strawberry Festival to Support Plymouth Emergency Services and Other Local Community Causes

This year’s Strawberry Festival, held on Wednesday, June 22, will support several great local groups. Broadly speaking, the Raffle supports Tyson Church programs for the community, the Strawberry Dessert Line supports the local work of Tyson Ladies Aid Society, and the Food Line supports Plymouth Emergency Services, Windsor County Youth Services, and scholarships to help Plymouth youth attend Bethany Birches Camp.

Plymouth Emergency Services is made up of both the Fire Department and the First Response team. There are 16 members on the FD and 8 on the FR team. Of those 8, 5 are also on the FD, so the teams have good cross-over training on both sides.

Tom & I passed through some horrendous thunderstorms on Friday evening on the way to the American Legion dinner in Woodstock, but we enjoyed the rainbow that appeared afterward. The weather did improve as the weekend progressed, but the bugs were out in force – black flies, mosquitoes, & then some other little flying/biting creatures. Many of us also headed into our gardens & flower beds despite these little pests! Bikers, joggers, & walkers all seemed anxious to get outdoors.

Going along Echo Lake, it looked like a good crowd at Camp Plymouth State park & several other folks launched water crafts from the boat access. I noticed one woman venturing down to the water with a stylish hat – the kind with the netting that comes down past your shoulders!

Classes are filling up, so get your young artist signed up today! Fletcher Farm School for the Arts and Crafts in Ludlow, VT invites you to join us in our Young Artists Day Camps. Boys and Girls ages 6-17 are welcome. Fletcher Farm School has become a favorite for many of our are youth whom return year after year for arts and crafts camps. Please note that these are not drop-in classes. Students must be registered for the entire session. Be sure to sign up early as class space is limited. Check our website for class listings, tuition pricing. If your child is serious about arts and crafts, this is the place for them to expand their creativity.

Help Plan the July Plymouth 250th Celebrations

The next meeting of the Plymouth Historical society will be Sunday, June 5th, at the Historical Society building. Please note that the TIME has CHANGED for this meeting. We will convene at 1:00 pm, NOT 3:30. We will continue to work on plans for the 250th celebration.  This meeting will also be a hands-on work session as we put together Melissa’s fabuous “historical” fans for the event. Please join the group to help finalize celebration details and create the fan souvenirs. No artistic abilities necessary!!

It looks like another soggy week coming up. I was grateful for some sunny (or at least not rainy) breaks in the weather when I could get out for a bike ride. Walking doesn’t seem to be a good option at the moment with the black flies! I may be rationalizing, but it seems too wet to work in the garden……

Thanks to Terry Bascom for covering in the pulpit this past Sunday at Tyson Church. It was a much needed break for me. This Sunday, in honor of Memorial Day, we will be lighting candles in remembrance not only of those who served our country, but also for all who have passed on. Feel free to join us for our 10:30 Worship service.

Tom & I attended the People of the Past program performed on the town hall stage in Ludlow on Saturday evening. Noteworthy people from the towns of Ludlow, Plymouth, & Mt Holly were depicted by a group of 8th graders in conjunction with the Black River Academy Museum. The students researched various people, then acted them out. Cedar Allen portrayed noted chairmaker, Leighton G. Fullam. Many Plymouth folks were presented: Calvin Coolidge & his sister, Abby, & Milton Moore to name a few. Each presentation helped to remind us of our rich local heritage.

Legislative Report from Rep. Dennis Devereux
for Ludlow, Mount Holly and Plymouth

Our grade at the end of the first year of a new legislative session is often an incomplete. This stems from the many ideas that are put forward as bills, with only few being finalized. The more complex issues demand additional information to make the most informed decision, or in this case to finalize legislation.

This year seemed unusual in that major steps were taken to improve bills from last session. A couple that come to mind are the changes to our land use program, and the strengthening of the DUI legislation that is set to be implemented this July. I was pleased with the final results, and hope both move us in the intended direction.
