The Plymouth Historical Society is organizing events, archival displays, the sale of commemorative souvenirs and seeking oral histories to celebrate Plymouth’s 250th anniversary over July 4th weekend and throughout the month.

Approximately 70 people attended to special meeting to re-vote the Town Budget. The budget of $101,422.63, of which $889,837.07 is to be raised through taxes, was approved by a vote of 41 to 29. Notices had been mailed out previously detailing some of the changes & noting that the amount was slightly higher than the original budget.
At the start of the meeting, Kathy Lynds immediately moved to amend the figure to include a raise in the three Selectmen’s compensation from $600 per year to $1,200 per year. Although she noted their hard work & that there had not been an increase in many years, the motion was rather soundly defeated.
Selectman, Ralph Michael responded to Eric Johnsen’s concern about the cost of health insurance for Town employees. Ralph said that he had consulted with the League of Cities & Towns & that our package is comparable to Mt Holly, Shrewsbury, & Reading. Also, extra was included in the budget with the anticipation that rates will increase in January.

The weather cooperated & we had a busy group of volunteers for Green-Up Day this past Saturday. Thanks to Eric Johnson & Elaine Gambone for organizing it again this year. See Elaine’s write-up for the details! A wonderful potluck lunch capped off the effort. At the recent Tyson Ladies Aid meeting it was decided to help support the History Project at Black River High School, in addition to providing scholarships for both WUHS & Black River. Fundraising will be through the strawberry shortcake sales at the Strawberry Festival (6/22) & also the annual Bazaar (8/13) held in Ludlow, where various baskets & other gifts will be raffled. The Ladies will also be busy handling refreshments for both Evelyn Warren’s celebration of life & Jane & Rob Buswell’s memorial service.
Weekly yoga classes begin at Good Commons on Tuesdays starting on May 17 (NOTE: NEW DATE). The 90 minute class is led by Karen Swanson. Karen is certified in PRYT & Thai-Shiatsu and has 15 years teaching experience.Her teaching is informed by a variety of yoga traditions as well as authentic movement, feldenkrais, dance, and the rhythm of the seasons.
Class will include vinyasa (flow), yin yoga (long holdings), partner yoga, inversions, deep rest & meditation. Beginners are welcome.
Class cost: $75/5 weeks

In our ninth year coordinating Green Up Day in Plymouth, the word from our dedicated volunteers is that the pickup was “light” this year. We lucked out with excellent weather for the morning. Many of us returned to the Fire Station for a pot-luck lunch and to connect and share tales of trash. Between pre and post Green Up Day, we numbered around 40 participants.
Folks with scheduling conflicts are always welcome to join in whenever they can. Green UP bags, t-shirts, and hats can be picked up at Eric and Elaine’s. Call ahead 672-3493. We have organic cotton t-shirts and hats this year, thanks to the generosity of a few Plymouth homeowners. Thanks to everyone, including the elders in our community: Captain Calkins for his outrageous carrot cake, and Liza Ward for her parker house rolls. We are getting to be a pretty tidy town. We left the state highways to the state crews as last year they cleaned them up. Let’s hope they do their role again in keeping Plymouth Green.

Finally a nice day on Sunday! What is with this crazy weather? We only had 2 inches of snow on Saturday, but I understand other parts of town had more. Couldn’t believe it was still on the ground Sunday on the way to church!
Tom had taken down the protective wooden box that he puts around our mailbox during the winter – near fatal mistake! Fortunately he was able to bend it back into serviceable shape after the snow plow came through. Our neighbors, Linda Seader & Larry Miller now have an attractive new post that will probably sport a new mailbox shortly….
Legislative Report from Rep. Dennis Devereux for Ludlow, Mount Holly and Plymouth
Sometimes bills in Montpelier take unplanned twist and turns. The vital records bill, which my committee was ready to present to the full house, was delayed for several weeks. There were some sections that required input from other committees. It was necessary to rewrite these sections rather than use many amendments to improve the language. One concern moved the increased copying fees to be consolidated into just one section. More important was inserting specific language from the state court administrators’ office for the new alert system being created to deal with fraudulent attempts to access confidential information. We also needed fiscal notes to understand the financial impact to the state to implement the changes.
The result will create a law that brings our vital records security system up to national standards, and one we hope which discourages a dishonest person from requesting certified copies of birth or death certificates. The Vermont Department of Health will implement these changes, and have a system to gather and share health statistics with other states. We will also see an increase in the protection of our personal information.

What fun having Julia Kolwaski, Teresa Steward, & Maddie Dean dance down the aisle waving palms & singing. Ann Rose’s granddaughter, Jacqueline joined them, under the direction of Cheryl Bishop. Also, before our Palm Sunday service, we learned that Rob Buswell passed. His wife, Jane, was the pastor of Tyson Church for over 50 years. Please note that after this article was submitted to the Standard, Jane Buswell passed away on Monday evening.
This is school vacation week for many youngsters both here in VT & elsewhere. My niece & her husband & two children used this opportunity to come up from Sun – Tues to meet Owen! Kathy Lynds daughter Elizabeth & her husband, Dave, are traveling from PA at the end of the week with little Matthew.
Today the Vermont Transportation Board announced the designation of the “Scenic Route 100 Byway.” The Vermont Scenery Preservation Council held a public hearing on March 24 at the Calvin Coolidge Museum and Education Center in Plymouth Notch, after which the members unanimously approved the application to designate the “Scenic Route 100 Byway.” The Transportation Board’s review and approval was the final step in the designation process.
The designation of the Route 100 byway is a joint effort of representatives from Pittsfield, Killington, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Ludlow and Andover; Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, Office of Killington Economic Development and Tourism, local businesses, and the Southern Windsor County and Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Planning Commissions.
This designation offers travelers historic, cultural, scenic and recreational information about the towns and villages along the Byway and strategies for towns to improve and enhance the resources and destinations along the way.
The Route 100 byway is Vermont’s 8th scenic byway. The route for the byway extends along Route 100 from Andover to Pittsfield, and includes the entirety of Route 100A. This announcement follows the recent designation of 50 miles of Route 4, from Rutland to Hartford, as the Crossroad of Vermont Byway.
