Issues Reviewed at Plymouth Town Plan Hearing

On Monday, April 18, a hearing was held by the Selectboard to review the proposed Town Plan, which is required to be updated every five years. About 17 people attended including the 3 selectmen. The regional plan controls how large our village areas can be. That is going to be rewritten and hopefully Plymouth people can have input in that process.

The owner of what was Bear Creek Ski Area would like to build a village on the bottom 3rd of the mountain. At present the village boundaries don’t include that area.

There was a lot of discussion about the proposed 5 acre zoning along Class 2 and 3 highways. Continue reading →

I am going to make this short & sweet today because of the recent warning about a severe thunderstorm heading our way. I couldn’t believe that they broke into the radio program to tell us about golf ball sized hail & to warn people to seek shelter inside immediately! I hope this turns out to less dramatic than predicted…..

I understand that the Strawberry Festival planning meeting on the 10th was upbeat, with things moving along nicely to assure a fantastic event that will be fun for folks & provide for community needs, especially those of our youngsters. Tyson Ladies Aid will be in charge of the strawberry part, Tyson Church in handling the raffle, & many people will be working the BBQ piece. If you have new items or services for the raffle, Dale Lynds (672-1463) is handling the collection. Terry Bascom (672-5390) would love to hear from potential volunteers. Mark your calendar for 6/22 at Camp Plymouth State Park!

Save the Date for the 2011 Plymouth Strawberry Festival

The annual Plymouth Strawberry Festival will be held at Camp Plymouth State Park on Wednesday, June 22nd.

The organizing committee has met twice to get things rolling, and help has come from many quarters. Area merchants and individuals have already stepped up with offers of raffle prizes, and town residents are coming forward to help staff the event. If you have a raffle prize you’d like to offer, please contact Dale Lynds @ 672.1463. To volunteer some time, contact Terry Bascom @ 672.5390.

The next committee meeting will be on May 1 at Terry Bascom’s home. A more extensive report will follow.

Green Up Day on May 7!

Saturday, May 7, is officially the Green Up Day for the State of Vermont. Please consider joining the group of volunteers in Plymouth to scour the town roads of litter.

Plan to meet at 8 AM behind the Plymouth Municipal Building to sign in, pick up your official greenup bags, and establish your route. There will be free goodies for all volunteers. This year, we are offering Green Up t-shirts, hats, a few stainless steel water bottles, and a few stainless steel travel mugs. Come early for the best selection! We will plan to meet back at the Municipal Building for a pot luck lunch at noon. Please bring a dish! The meal is always a good time.

Pick up trucks are always needed to haul the collected trash back to the transfer station. Remember to wear sturdy shoes, a hat, and gloves, and to bring a water bottle. Yoga classes return to Plymouth?

Karen Swanson, founder of Open Sky Yoga, is considering bringing her yoga classes back to Plymouth in May if there is enough interest. For over a year Swanson held a weekly class at Good Commons, a fully equipped yoga studio, located at the intersection of Route 100 and Route 100A. The classes are open to all – from beginners to more experienced practitioners.

The class would be held at Good Commons weekly on Tuesdays at 6PM. There will be a single rate for the class: $75 for 5 weeks, consecutive.  Drop-ins may become available. If you have to miss a week, there are make-ups available in Woodstock, Monday at 5:30 and Thursday at 6.

I am writing this on Monday, with snow showers making it a rather bleak day. Hopefully by the time the paper comes out, the sun with be shining, the temps will be more seasonable, & the birds will be singing again! Now that winter is winding down, a reminder that the snowmobile trails close on 4/15.

The weather has actually been good for sugaring. Tom was at it all day & into the early evening on Sunday, with some help from Chris & Melissa, & others. Bode, the sugar house wonder dog saved the day by noticing a leaking can of syrup. Unfortunately, he had an upset tummy after lapping up too much of it!

The end of March is upon us, but in some ways it seems like the middle of winter here in Tyson! We still have a great deal of snow & patches of ice, plus the temps are rather chilly these mornings. Snowshoeing was fabulous on Patch Brook Road on Sunday afternoon. However, the warmth of the sun, daylight extending into the early evening, & the boisterous chirping of birds remind me that spring is coming…..

Our First Responders were called out twice this weekend for snowmobile accidents. One was late Friday night on the Shrewsbury side of town. The second was on Saturday on the trail across from Colby Pond that heads toward the Notch. Everyone mobilized for this second one, fearing severe injury, but ultimately the person was able to drive himself out & go to the hospital on his own.

Town Budget Meeting Scheduled for April 28

Barbara Rabtoy, Plymouth Town Clerk, reports that the meeting to vote the town budget is scheduled for Thursday, April 28 at 7pm at the Town Municipal Building.

This meeting is needed to pass the Town of Plymouth budget after the originally proposed budget was not approved at Town Meeting on February 28.

The meeting has been warned and posted.

The Plymouth Historical Society is organizing events, archival displays, the sale of commemorative souvenirs and seeking oral histories to celebrate Plymouth’s 250th anniversary over July 4th weekend and throughout the month.
