Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Celebrations Planned — Margo’s Plymouth Report

It is quite amazing to me that we are already a week into November.  Is it my imagination or does time begin to move faster toward the end of the year?  Our grandsons were giggling the other day over the many “naked” trees!  It always amazes me, however, to see some trees, usually protected from the wind, that hold on to their leaves well after the others become bare.

If you have traveled through town over the past couple of days, you may have noticed the road work signs on Rte 100 and the Notch hill.  Work is slated to begin this week from what I understand.  Sorry that I don’t have more specifics, but I imagine you should be prepared for delays if you go that way.

There was a lively discussion about Unprepared when the Book Club met this past week.  Although some negative reactions, most felt that it was intriguing, making it difficult to put down.  Next month’s selection is The Shepherd’s Life by James Rebanks for discussion on 12/1.

If you just can’t wait for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, consider attending the Reach Out luncheon on 11/17 sponsored jointly by Tyson Ladies Aid and Tyson Church at 11:30 AM downstairs in the Community Room of the church.  All are welcome to join the celebration!

We attended the lovely 60th birthday gathering for Willow Bascom on Sunday with her family and many other Plymouth residents.  Good food and good company!  Also, birthday congratulations go out to Mary Jane Crockett (11/8).

Remember to mark your calendar for the Coolidge Holiday program on 12/10 that will include a concession by the Tyson Ladies Aid – soups, chili and a number of different pies!

Brrr! Snow!

Yes, we need the precipitation, but it has turned rather gloomy with the rain on this Sunday afternoon and in light of the fact that the snow has vanished on our end of town.  I was glad that it didn’t happen when Erik Johanssson was loading his harp back into the car after church.  As usual his music was wonderful – thought-provoking and soothing at the same time.

I was so pleased to join friends, Jan and John, for the Saturday night performance of “Cabaret.”  It was absolutely spectacular and so amazing that this talent was assembled right here in VT!  Tesha Buss of Good Commons is exceptionally gifted with her acting, dancing, and singing.  It was nice to see Nate Hinson, formerly of Plymouth, on the roster as well.

Well, the snow last Thursday caused the cancellation of the Book Club, but the discussion of Unprepared will take place this Thursday, 11/3 at the Community Center at 6:30 PM.  Nancy Hagge and I were both noticing how strange it felt to be reading about the big Storm in VT in the book, when inclement weather was swirling all around us!

For those of you who would like to see Bill Jarvi, he will be at the Café at Delight in Ludlow on Friday, 11/4 at 10:00 AM.  Although a bit hard of hearing, he still enjoys greeting folks and his smile is as warm as ever.

Remember to “save the date” for the November Reach Out Luncheon that will be a traditional Thanksgiving feast on 11/17.  More details to follow!

Plymouth business owner performs in Cabaret!

Good Commons owner Tesha Buss is returning to the stage for Pentangle’s production of the Broadway classic Cabaret! at the Town Hall Theatre in Woodstock. Buss plays Fraulein Kost and Kit Kat Club dancer Fritzie.  Pentangle has brought together Broadway performers with local talent to create a beautiful and extremely entertaining night at the theatre!  It’s a bit racy for kids, but makes for a great date night!

Museum Closure and “Irene” DVDs

img_20161019_145930_436The Plymouth VT Historical Society Museum is now closed for the winter and will reopen again in May 2017. The museum is always available by appointment by calling 802-438-8351 (leave a message) or any of the officers.

“Irene: Ruin to Renewal” DVDs are stocked for the holidays. Here are some recent comments about the film: “Amazing piece of work,” “What a terrific project,” “Great content and presentation,” “I’ll watch it again and again and probably cry again too.”

Consider giving one as a gift to a family member, friend, or neighbor. Making a donation of the film to a library, school, town or disaster related organization is another option. Proceeds help to defray printing costs and support the Historical Society and its mission.

The DVDs are available locally at the Plymouth Town Hall clerk’s office Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 4 PM. The cost is $10 per DVD.  Cash or checks are requested for payment. If ordering by mail, please address to the Plymouth Vermont Historical Society at 68 Town Office Road, Plymouth, VT 05056. The shipping charge on mail orders is now $3.00/DVD. Please include your shipping address, contact information and a check with the correct amount (including shipping) made out to the Plymouth Historical Society. The DVD(s) will be shipped as soon as possible after the order is received.

I almost feel guilty to still be enjoying our lovely autumn with its amazing colors when other places have been decimated by wind and rain.  How dare I complain about the daylight hours shortening!  Strange creature we humans…..

I admit that I have not done much snooping for local news this week.  How wonderful it would be if folks would send me some!  I am sure our students are doing fantastic things.  There must be some birthdays, anniversaries, and achievements to celebrate.

Oh well, I will tell you about the incredible event in Hanover on Sunday to raise money for CHaD – the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth.  There were thousands of people and there was something for everyone.  Landon and Owen along with several young friends (including cancer survivor Nolan Alberty) ran or walked the 1 mile designated for them.  Some folks participated in the half marathon, many ran the 5K and some of us walked the 5K.  All of us received ovations and medals.  The air was electric with good cheer and the presence of superheroes of all ages was incredible.  Music of various types was played throughout the day.  I was so grateful for the loud beat of uplifting tunes near the end of the walk – it kept me going at a lively pace.  For those not actually participating, the green in Hanover is a wonderful place to socialize and enjoy the excitement, all for a good cause.

Activities are Winding Down as Winter Weather Descends — Margo’s Plymouth Report

There has been a shower of leaves at our house lately, but they are still lovely – even though many of them are on the ground now.  I imagine tomorrow (Monday) will be spent gathering some colorful ones with my grandsons!  The changing seasons bring ponderings:

Autumn and Life
Crimson leaves, plus orange and gold

Are drifting into my planter of once lush impatiens.

Two different seasons, yet they blend together

During this time of in-betweeness.

One seeps into the other – how much like life….

Ludlow was congested on Saturday with the chicken BBQ in front of the Legion and the chili cook-off on Depot Street.  Still, there were a number of people who worked their way through to attend the Memorial Service for William Bostock that was held at the Baptist Church.  Condolences to Ruth and also to the family of Rose Parsells.

It is strange, but I don’t seem to have many on my birthday list for October.  Congratulations to Bill Jarvi who turns 92 on 10/11.  He was at the Café at Delight this past Friday, where he holds court once per month prior to his chiropractor appointment.   It is generally the 1st Friday of the month and folks are invited to visit with him there.  When I asked how he was, he said “top shelf”!  I believe that Sammi Lynds will turn 7 on 10/17, so best wishes to her, too.

By the time the Standard comes out, Bea Wheeler will be back home in Plymouth.  John will remain in the Gill Home for another week or so, before he comes home.

Things are winding down a bit around here.  The Historic Site will be closing 10/16, although some buses may still be visiting there.  I am not sure of the exact date of the start of road work on the Notch Hill, but I understand it will be soon.  Between road construction and those enjoying the foliage who are not paying attention to their driving, the rest of us will need to be very alert and careful!

Deep Fall Settles Into Plymouth — Margo’s Plymouth Report

This was a dreary weekend, but the many events taking place helped to make it fun.  The Harvest Fair at Ludlow Elementary School on Saturday was busy and festive.  Then I scurried up to the Notch to catch the performance by Linda Radtke, accompanied by Arthur Zone called “History Through Song”, that was sponsored by the VT Humanities Council and arranged by Bill Jenney.  It was simply marvelous, with a diverse selection of music that included songs from Civil War days, such as ‘Neath the Pines of VT.  Also presented was Keep Cool and Keep Coolidge and the closing song was the VT State Song.  I believe they had a good crowd at the Site for the Apple Fest, which had many other attractions, including the PFD BBQ and the “Anything Apple Recipe Contest”, which was won by Sheree Vaughn-Tucker with her apple muffins.

We had an animated discussion about America’s First Daughter at the Book Club on 9/29 and we have actually set up the next two books:  We are reading We Are Unprepared by Meg Little Reilly for 10/27 and The Shepherd’s Life by James Rebanks for 12/1.  We really do have a great time, so think about joining us.   Please be aware that Tyson Library will closing after the holiday weekend, so the last day to stock up on books is 10/8!

I am so excited about the Mindfulness Classes on Tuesdays from 6:00 – 7:00 PM with Susan Mordecai at the Community Center.  The initial 4 class are 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8.   It is so nice to have activities happening right here in town!

Restaurants in town will be taking a break.  The Inn at Water’s Edge will be closing 10/17, but be aware that they will be having a 4 course Thanksgiving Dinner for $25.00.  They only seat 25, so if you are interested, make your reservations soon – 228-8134.  Also, the Echo Lake Inn (228-8602) will be open Monday through Thursday the next three weeks, through 10/20, plus Fridays, 10/7 & 10/21.  In addition they will be open Saturday 10/22 as well.  They will also be serving Thanksgiving dinner.
