2014 Irene Reconstruction: Route 100 at Frog City Road, Plymouth, VT

From Todd Menees, Rivers Program, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation

Locals and the traveling public will see that a section of the Black River alongside Route 100 in Plymouth below the intersection with Frog City Road is being reconstructed by VTrans over a 2-week period in August and September, 2014. This project is a river restoration effort to bring the Black River channel back up to the original grade that existed prior to Tropical Storm Irene as a result of the unauthorized dredging that occurred in the immediate aftermath of the flood to rebuild the damaged section of Route 100 to restore traffic access between Plymouth and Ludlow.

The project plans were reviewed last year in the design phase and have been authorized by the Vermont Rivers Program and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project is being reviewed during construction by Todd Menees, VT River Management Engineer, Jim Caulin, VTrans Resident Engineer overseeing the project, and Brian Cote of Milone & MacBroom, the Fluvial Morphologist contracted by VTrans to provide technical assistance and report on the progress of the work effort.

The project requires in-channel wet-work with construction equipment in the river flow due to the nature of the work in reconstructing the river channel back up to the pre-flood existing elevations with large stone rip-rap covered with a foot of in-stream sediment. The reason for the channel bed reconstruction is to restore the channel geometry and to protect the road embankment revetment in future floods. Upon completion, the river channel will be reconstructed to mimic upstream and downstream conditions for fish habitat to the greatest practical extent.

The usual means and methods of bypass of water and control of sediment are not viable due to the large upstream watershed area and steep, deep channel geometry. The work includes two in-stream sediment check dams to moderate sediment discharges and daily monitoring of sediment movement down river to Amherst Lake. The river monitoring last week has indicated that the sediment discharge has settled into the river channel and has not reached Amherst Lake.

The Project Team anticipates that the initial work last week resulted in the greatest sediment discharge and that subsequent work moving upstream will result in diminished sediment discharge in comparison to observed discharge levels last week. The project will continue for about another week and may be delayed due to inclement weather. This public notice is provided as a public education and outreach effort to advise locals and the traveling public about the state government efforts to continue flood resiliency efforts to rebuild Vermont rivers and roads three years after Tropical Storm Irene ravaged our state.

8/31/14

Well, this is late afternoon on Sunday & the rain has made an appearance, not in torrents, but gently watering the earth. I think my plants are happy. I am told there were quite a few visitors at the Historic Site this weekend. The Folk & Blues performance took place in the church on Sunday just to be on the safe side!

There was a good crowd of people at Hawk on Saturday for the unveiling of the plaque dedicating a special garden area to Mike Bivins. He envisioned & then implemented the lovely array of plantings immediately to the left of the Reception Center. Folks had various stories to share, many of them telling of Mike moving immensely heavy items single-handedly! All agreed that big Mike had a big heart & a big smile to match.

The Reading Group met last week & an in-depth discussion of Defending Jacob took place. It was nice to meet Ruth Brisson, newly moved to Plymouth with her family into the former Merino house. Lucy E by Plymouth resident Cassie Horner is the next book for discussion. Midge Tucker has some copies of this selection. The discussion will take place on Thurs, 9/25 at 6:30!

The week before last was one of new purchases at our house. One day my new washer & dryer were delivered, replacing ones from the early ‘80s. I have no illusion that these new ones will last that long! Also, our heat pump was installed, so perhaps I won’t be freezing this winter. It was interesting to see a recommendation for them by VPIRG in the Rutland Herald.

Plan to attend the Second Grace Coolidge Musicale of the season on 9/7 from 4:00 – 5:30 PM. Also, mark your calendar for Plymouth Bounty Day, 9/27 from 10:00 – 2:00. Turn out to showcase your areas of expertise & your talents. Let folks know about your business. Learn about various resources & agencies that provide service in our area. Chat with the Sheriff. Come one & all to explore & share the bounty within our community & that includes the great people that live here!

On Wednesday, September 17th, the Crown Point Road Association will be hiking the Plymouth section of the Crown Point Military Road as part of their end-to-end traverse of this historic route. Holly for your return transportation. This will be a day hike so good hiking boots, water and clothing appropriate for the weather will be needed. A visit to the grave of the unknown Revolutionary War Soldier on Salt Ash Mountain is planned. A few members of the Plymouth Historical Society will be participating in the hike of this section. Margo Marrone’s Plymouth Report, Hawk to honor Mike Bivens Saturday

Republished with permission from The Vermont Standard

8/24/14

Nice weekend weather-wise here I understand & it was lovely where we were in RI as well! Glad to be heading north on Sunday, since the flow of out-of-state vehicles was quite heavy coming toward us. We stopped at the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, NH on the way home. If you haven’t been there, it is a lovely spot welcoming all faiths with beautiful gardens & “a memorial honoring all Americans who served our nation”.

Well, we had a well-attended Reach Out Luncheon (sponsored jointly by Tyson Church & Tyson Ladies Aid) on 8/21 in the downstairs Community Room at the church. Our speakers were Matt Denhart, Executive Director & Rushad Thomas, Program coordinator for the Calvin Coolidge Foundation.

Recent events were discussed & also an optimistic message about spreading the legacy of Calvin Coolidge across the country with presentations in NYC, MA, CA, & even Coolidge AZ! Thanks to Kathy Lynds for arranging our guest speakers, who are welcome anytime The teens were not able to help this time, but Matt & Rushad jumped right to help clear tables!

Looking forward to the Book Group discussion of Defending Jacob on Thurs at 6:30 at the former PES building, the home of our Community Center. It was quite an interesting story with a number of twists & turns. Feel free to attend even if you have not read the book & listen to the conversation about it!

Hoping for good weather for the Plymouth Folk & Blues Festival at the Historic Site over Labor Day Weekend – both Saturday & Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 PM . Remember that It will take place rain or shine!

SPECIAL NOTE:
Hawk Inn & Mtn Resort extends an invitation to the community to attend the dedication of a special garden in memory of Mike Bivins on Sat, 8/30 at 2:30 PM. A plaque will be place at this area near the reception center, where Mike had cultivated a lovely grouping of plants.

8/17/14

I hate to say it, but I have seen a few trees with changing leaves! Certainly the cooler temps this weekend are a forewarning of what is to come….. In the meantime, however, there are some great events coming up.

Come out & enjoy some terrific music at the tenth annual Plymouth Folk & Blues Festival at the Historic Site over Labor Day Weekend. The entertainment, organized by Jay Ottaway, takes place from 2:00 – 5:00 PM on both Sat, 8/ 30 & Sun, 8/31. You can enjoy these outdoor performances for free, although donations are greatly appreciated. Collections for the VT Food Bank of non-perishable items are also encouraged. The children can enjoy wagon rides & face-painting. There will even be a classic car parade! For more info call 672-3773.

For a different genre of music, plan to attend the Second Grace Coolidge Musicale of the season on 9/7 from 4:00 – 5:30 PM, featuring Bozena O’Brien (violin), Roger Ellsworth (viola), Gary Hodges (cello), & of course Abigail Charbeneau (piano). This concert will include Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60, as well as music by Robert Schumann. Enjoy refreshments at the Wilder House Restaurant after the performance.

Now for some exciting romantic news. Best wishes to Melissa (Missy) Waysville & Mike Benson on their 7/3/14 marriage! Also, several engagements have taken place for young men from our area. Sam Moyer is engaged to Renee Lehman & a January 2015 wedding is planned. James Nadeau is engaged to Sally Norton of Essex Junction, with a summer 2015 wedding planned. Lastly, Eric Evans is engaged to Christina Lefebvre & their wedding will take place in July 2015. Congratulations to all!

Well, I have been away & last week was a very busy week, so I haven’t searched out much news! I did want to say “thank you” to all of those who supported the Tyson Ladies Aid Bazaar by donating items, buying them, & working there – it was a huge success! Funds that are raised go back into the community in various ways: supporting the Tyson Library, school scholarships, joint help with Tyson Church for the monthly Reach Out Luncheon, & meeting many other community needs.

Also, how wonderful that our town was the site of the Oath of Allegiance taken by so many people who became citizens of the USA on 8/11/14. At a time when many people are unhappy with the way things are happening here, it is a important reminder of the freedom & good things things that happen in our country, too. We are blessed!

Margo Marrone’s Plymouth Report

8/3/14

Well, the weather held for Plymouth Old Home Day, which was a pleasant surprise! The Emergency Services BBQ went well & almost all of the chicken was sold. I left my post on the food line at 1:30 in order to attend Reeve Lindbergh’s talk, which was very interesting. I was unaware of the connection, but it seems that her dad, noted aviator Charles Lindbergh, had dropped a letter in the Notch from his plane on a fly-over! It is now on exhibit. President Coolidge had appointed Reeve’s grandfather to serve as Ambassador to Mexico & that is where Charles met his future wife, Ann Morrow.

I understand the debates over the past week were well-attended and animated, but respectful. It sounds like it was a wonderful experience for these high school age students, some of whom were home-schooled. The Coolidge Foundation scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Kasey Rae Donna. She is a social work major at the U of Southern ME & has been a dedicated counselor at Bethany Birches Camp for some time now. Congratulations!

There is more going on at the Historic Site this coming weekend. Noted Civil War historian David Book will be presenting his program at 2:00 PM on Sat, 8/9. Sponsored by the VT Humanities Council, it is free & open to the public. For more information, you can call 802-672-3773.

Don’t forget the Tyson Ladies Aid Bazaar from 10 – 2 on Sat at Memorial Park in Ludlow. Lots of yummy baked good, marvelous gift baskets & gift certificates (including one for the Wilder House – thanks, Nancy!), a book sale & chicken BBQ. Something for everyone!

Tyson Ladies Aid Annual Bazaar August 9 in Ludlow

From Sally Scarp

The Tyson Ladies’ Aid Association will hold its 104th annual summer bazaar on the green at Veterans Memorial Park in Ludlow, Vermont on Saturday August 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. rain or shine.  The event will feature a chicken barbeque with corn on the cob and homemade coleslaw and baked beans.  Baked goods, such as pies, cakes, cookies and bread will also be offered for sale.

“This is such a fun event, especially since Ludlow no longer celebrates the zucchini harvest,” said Janine Norman, one of the organizers.  “We have some amazing bakers who are very proud of their wares and the natural ingredients they use. This year we will continue our basket raffle for over 50 themed baskets made and donated by our members”, she continues. “Two new additions to this year’s bazaar is the addition of a crafts sale and a book sale.”

The Tyson Ladies’ Aid Association was founded in 1880 to raise funds to bring a church to Tyson.  In 1887, the Ladies had purchased the Tyson Iron Works office and established the Tyson Library at that site.  After a period of inactivity, they reorganized in 1910 and have operated continuously since then, using money raised to support the library, fund scholarships and benefit the local community.
