More crazy weather, but at least most of it has been in the evening or overnight. I was really wondering how the fierce Sunday morning thunderstorm would effect church, but most folks seemed to get there just fine. Fortunately the intensity of the storm abated by the time our Worship service began. Not sure the effect on the Blessing of the Animals, but we had a number of dogs in attendance & pictures of dogs & cats to be blessed. The rain had ceased entirely, so we gathered on the lawn with dogs of all sizes announcing their presence & greeting each other! An opening prayer & a story about a therapy dog was shared, then each pet & owner was prayed for separately.
The Book Group will be discussing the Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd on Thurs, 7/31 at 6:30 at the Community Center. Even if you haven’t read it, consider joining us!
Don’t forget that Plymouth Old Home Day is coming up on 8/2 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Notch. There will be a re-enactment of Calvin Coolidge’s “Homestead Inaugural” & a special presentation by Reeve Lindbergh, author & daughter of the famous aviator. As usual you can enjoy wagon rides, old-time music, sheep shearing, traditional craft demonstrations, & historic children’s games. Bring your appetite for the Emergency Services BBQ at noon!
The following weekend, 8/9 will be the Tyson Ladies Aid Bazaar that is being held at Memorial Park in Ludlow (across from the Baptist Church) from 10:00 – 2:00. As in the past, there will a bake table with lots of yummy goodies; a large array of baskets & gift certificates with individual buckets so you can choose where to place your raffle tickets; & the luscious chicken BBQ with homemade baked beans. Books will be on sale as well. Serving the community through scholarships, sponsoring the Tyson Library, & meeting other local needs is the mission of this group of dedicated ladies. Come out & support their efforts.

On Thursday, July 31st, the Plymouth Book Club will meet to discuss Sue Monk Kidd’s “The Invention of Wings.” Join us at the Community Center (former elementary school) at 6:30 for lively conversation and neighborly camaraderie. Margo Marrone will be leading the discussion. Bring a beverage, if you wish. A little “treat” will be supplied.
The next book for discussion will be “Defending Jacob,” by William Landay. It is a legal thriller, fast paced and will generate some powerful questions. The book can be obtained at libraries, purchased for kindles and nooks or ordered cheaply as a paperback. Each reader will be responsible for obtaining her preferred format. The date for discussion will be determined at the meeting on July 31st, most likely mid to late September.

So many birds around this year – the sound of their singing fills the air, even in the wee hours of the morning. An odd thing happened the other day. I was in kitchen when suddenly a woodpecker began hammering away at the outside of the house. I went out on the deck to request that it cease & desist. It immediately flew into a nearby tree. As long as I was out there, I went to the end of the deck to see the swallow nest that had recently been built despite our attempts to keep that from happening.
As I walked back toward the door, a woodpecker abruptly landed with a thud near my feet. It was blinking so I scooped it up. It didn’t appear to be hurt, but it attached itself securely to my finger with its feet. I managed to detach it & place it on the railing of the deck, talking soothingly to it all the time, of course. Strange as it may seem, I have done this many times & most often the birds revive themselves & fly away. I told it that God knows every sparrow the falls, so He must know every woodpecker as well. Then I returned to the house. A half hour later it was still on the railing, but was more upright & looking a bit more alert. The next time I checked, it was gone. A few days later it was again pecking at the house!
If you are interested in a light breakfast or a lunch of delicious homemade comfort food, stop at the Wilder House located at the Notch. They are open from 9:00 – 4:00, 7 days per week! For those who didn’t see the notice, the Select Board will next meet on Monday, 7/28, at 6:00 PM instead of 7/ 21.
Don’t forget the Blessing of the Animals at Tyson Church on Sun, 7/27 at noon. Please leash or use a carrier & remember that a picture may be utilized if your pet is not easily or comfortably transported. Call the church at 228-4770 if you have questions & someone will get back to you.
Well, how did I miss Josie Flaster’s 2nd birthday on 7/2 – congratulations to this talkative little girl! On the end of the spectrum of life, please note the passing of Carmen Stillings, Liza Ward’s sister & Melissa Moore’s mom. Also several weeks ago Bill Calkins, affectionately known to many in town as the “Captain”, father of Willow Bascom, also passed away. Please remember these families in your thoughts & prayers.

Vermont’s oldest Fair which will take place on Friday through Sunday, August 22, 23, and 24 still has spaces open for Crafters. The Bondville Fair is a rain or shine fair and is held on the Fairgrounds on Rte 30. We are looking for crafters who make unique items–all items must be handcrafted (no commercial items are acceptable). Crafter’s hours are from Noon to 8PM on Friday with set up beginning at 9AM; the hours for Saturday are 10AM to 8PM, and for Sunday, from 10 AM to closing at 5PM. Each crafter will receive 2 free passes on to the grounds–the passes will be good for all three days (any other persons entering with the Crafter–including children will need to pay the entrance fee).

On Tuesday, August 12, beginning at 9:30AM, the Springfield Police Department is sponsoring the new 4 hour AARP Smart Driver Course. There will be a half hour lunch break, please bring a sandwich or salad with you– something to drink and something for desert will be provided.
The overall look and feel of this new 4 hour AARP Smart Driver Course is entirely different from the past courses. It has been designed to include older adult learning strategies and is now more participant-friendly and easier to follow. As a result of completing the course, participant’s will learn research-based strategies which can reduce the likelihood of their having a crash–note that since the first of the year older adults have been involved in about 1/3 of the fatalities in crashes in Vermont.
Participants will also be helped to understand the links between the driver, vehicle and road environment, learn how aging, medications, and alcohol affect driving ability and how to adjust their driving to allow for these changes.
In addition, the course can help to increase a driver’s confidence, know how to drive safely when sharing the road with other road users, and learn of some of the newest safety and advanced features on today’s cars.
For AARP Members, the fee is $15; for Non-Members, it is $20. To sign up for this new and exciting course, please call Bill at 802-672-1823.

Again this week, some rapidly passing storms, but also some lovely low-humidity, sunny days! We were at Camp Plymouth State Park on Wed & watched the clouds rolling in. It was funny to see most folks were not panicking. Someone with us checked her phone & announced that the storm was currently in W Rutland, so we had time for ice cream before running for cover. I wondered if others had found similar information because it seemed that everyone lingered & then packed up at once. We weren’t in the car very long when the heavens opened up, but by the time we reached home – it was over!
We had a very nice Tyson Ladies Aid picnic at the lovely home of Pam Bruno on Round Pond. Lots of good food & a few guests. Ann Mick was one, then Ann Rose & Carol Coyne each brought their granddaughters!
Echo Lake almost seemed crowded with boats on Saturday. We took our sailboat out & as we were gliding along, we passed Annie Clark & 2 friends in a canoe. The little beach at the end of Gold Brook is almost non-existent these days, but a few paddle boats came to rest on the thin margin of sand & went exploring. A couple of fishing boats were on the water, but it seemed a bit hazardous with the power boats & water skiers all out there enjoying the day.
I understand that Presidential High School Economic Debate that took place at the Notch recently was both lively & well-attended. There will be another one on 8/1 for those who are interested. Of course Old Home Days will be 8/2, so mark your calendars.
In case you were wondering about the hours for the Cheese Factory, they are 10:00 – 5:00 on weekdays & 9:30 – 5:00 on the weekends. Cheese is usually made on the weekends, but sometimes on Thursday & Friday as well. Best to call ahead – 802-672-3650

The beautiful weather of Saturday & Sunday was in stark contrast to the horrific wind & rain of Thursday evening. The damage in Plymouth did not seem as severe as some of the surrounding towns. Lying in bed that night I heard a tree coming down in seemingly slow motion up near our sugar house, but fortunately it fell without hitting anything.
When we first arrived at the Notch on Friday, we noted that there were relatively few folks on hand to march to the cemetery, but right at noon throngs of people emerged & joined the procession. This year’s program was particularly poignant, with a second wreath being placed on the grave of Calvin Jr. who died 90 years ago on 7/7/1924.
The Fire Dept was called out the other morning for a burning tree along Rte 100. Apparently fire had previously gutted some of the trunk. It was smoldering & smoke was actually billowing out woodpecker holes further up the tree!
There seem to be fewer dinner options in town these days. I mentioned the Inn at Water’s Edge last week. The Echo Lake Inn is now serving dinner Tues through Thursday & on the weekends when they aren’t hosting a wedding. Best to call ahead at 228-8602!
Many of us have beloved pets, so Tyson Church will be having a Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, 7/27 after our Morning Worship Service. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the unique place our pets occupy in our hearts & to honor these special creations of God who help to fulfill our lives. We will ask for blessings for each pet individually & for their owners as we gather on the church lawn at noon. Pets should be leashed or in carriers to avoid mishaps. Pictures can be brought if it is not feasible to bring your pet.
Those of us at Tyson Church fondly remember Nina Goodridge, whose obituary was noted in last week’s Standard. Her husband, Carroll preached here several Sundays each summer for a number of years. Kathy Lynds reminded me about the time Carroll ended up in the hospital on his scheduled Sunday & Nina bravely presented his sermon that day & she did a wonderful job! She & Carroll always enjoyed telling folks that they lived in Bridgewater VA for most of the year, but visited Bridgewater VT during the summer.
Just a note to remind folks to keep an eye out for wildlife darting across the roadways, especially at night. In recent days I have encountered a number of deer, a few cats & last night a rather large porcupine was lumbering up our driveway!
