12/1/13

I hope that everyone saw the wonderful write-up in the VT Standard on Ryan Blanchard along with pictures of this outstanding young man at his Eagle Scout ceremony. I was disappointed that I couldn’t be there, but it was so nice that his brother, Troy was able to attend.

Plans are underway for the Coolidge Holiday Open House on Sunday, 12/15 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Come enjoy the Christmas decorations & winter exhibits at the Museum & Education Center, the Aldrich House & the Plymouth Cheese Factory. There will be craft demonstrations, music, children‘s activities, sleigh rides & the Memory Tree lighting ceremony at 3:00 PM.

Don’t forget to bring your appetite because Tyson Ladies Aid will be serving delicious food at the Wilder House from 10:00 until 3:00. Lunch will feature chili, soups & home-baked goodies! TLA Member, Carol Coyne’s birthday is 12/17! As usual, there will also be a special stamp cancellation that day, as well.

We learned during sharing time in church that one of our local families had turducken for Thanksgiving Dinner this year – a chicken in a duck in a turkey! No matter what you feasted upon, I hope that it was special day of giving thanks.

Kathy Lynds has requested that we start the cookie decorating at 5:00 PM on Sunday, 12/22. This will be an opportunity for young people to come to Tyson Church ahead of our Annual Community Candlelight Service (7:00 PM) to use their talent to decorate Holiday cookies. We will also be providing pizza while they make their creations! If you would like to contribute some cookies for the project, feel free to do so. In any case, we always have plenty of refreshments following the service, with a special community time of fellowship. Hope you can join us!

Although I can’t recall the original source, these are words I wanted to use at our recent Service of Remembrance last Sunday afternoon, as we recalled those no longer with us during the Holiday Season. All of our tears & all of our laughter – we place them safely in the hands of God. All of our grief & all of our joy – we place them safely in the heart of God. All of our stories & all of our memories – we place them safely in the mind of God. Those we remember & those we love, we now trust to be safe in the embrace of God.

Dry Hydrant Installed at Hale Hollow Road

From Al Poirier, Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department

The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department has completed the installation of a dry hydrant at 1672 Hale Hollow Road. The installation of this dry hydrant is part of a comprehensive program to improve fire protection in Plymouth. The department had been looking for years to find a suitable location on Hale Hollow. When we found a landowner willing to let us do the installation on their property we took the opportunity to install a hydrant.

The Fire Department is in the process of improving fire protection in Plymouth by installing dry hydrants to improve the availability and accessibility of water for firefighting purposes. The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force through the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council provided assistance to the Fire Department in developing a plan to improve water supply in Plymouth.

The Vermont Legislature approved appropriations to assist communities in installing dry hydrants to improve fire protection in the rural area of Vermont. The Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force with the assistance of the Northern Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council administers the grant program.

Dry hydrants are a preferred method of providing water for firefighting in areas where there are no water mains. A dry hydrant consists of a 6 to 8 inch pipe with a fitting to which a pump/ tanker truck can attach. The pipe connects to a water source (Pond or stream) that can supply at least 60,000 gallons under drought conditions.

This is but one example of the service your fire department provides in preparation for the next alarm.

If you have any questions about developing a rural water supply in your area, please contact the Vermont Rural Fire Protection Task Force at 802-828-4582, dryhydrantguy@yahoo.com, or visit www.nvtrcd.org/vtrfptf.html

Well a bit more snow arrived Saturday night into Sunday morning than I had expected. I think we received about 5 inches in Tyson. From inside it looked lovely outside – until you walked out into that wind! It does seem to snow during hunting each year, making tracking easier. I did hear that Mark Savery shot a deer recently & that Isaac Sheldon got a good sized bear!

What a wonderful turkey dinner was served at the Reach Out Luncheon on Thursday at the church. The help with clean-up by the teens from Windsor Youth is always appreciated!

The Celebration of Life for Carroll Earle last week filled Bethany Mennonite Church literally to overflowing. Many humorous stories surfaced about this gentle man with a big heart & a passion for fun. Our condolences to family & friends alike.

The season of Advent will start this next weekend – a busy one for Tyson church. The Service of Remembrance will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday, 12/1. We will light candles from the Hope candle for those no longer with us, remembering them fondly. It is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Our Community Candlelight service will be at 7:00 PM on 12/22. There will be a cookie decorating time starting at 5:30 PM for youngsters. Then following the service we can feast on these goodies as well as others that folks bring! More details to follow…..

Plymouth School Building Update

From Terry Bascom, Plymouth Activity Coordinator

Update on Plymouth Schoolhouse as an Activity Center

Here is an update on what’s happening with the Plymouth Schoolhouse. It’s a bit long, but I want to be as transparent as possible, and give you all of the information.

Context

As you might be aware, I have spent a significant amount of time during the Fall season trying to work through our liability insurance program and complications. I have had one or more conversations with Two Rivers Supervisory District (who own the building), their insurance company, members of the Plymouth Selectboard, the town’s insurance company, members of the Plymouth School Committee (who oversee my work), the Okemo Valley Region Chamber of Commerce, an independent Ludlow insurance company, and several potential program providers. The goal has been to understand the role liability insurance plays in the operation of Plymouth Schoolhouse as an activity center.

At the end of those conversations, the Plymouth School Committee and I have formulated a new policy. You can read it by clicking the “Event Insurance” button on the Plymouth Activity Calendar website. I will summarize our process and policy in the rest of this post.

(Visit www.plymouthschool.org to view upcoming activities and additional information about what’s happening at the school)

Margo Marrone’s Plymouth Report – 11/3 & 11/10

Saturday was a busy day in Tyson. Some of you may remember Sis Hanlon,
formerly of Dublin Rd. Her daughter Pam Tempe-VanHennik was married at
the church on Saturday to Tom Gaffey in their wonderfully
family-oriented wedding ceremony.

On Saturday evening, there was a delicious Emergency Services dinner at
the town hall. Members of both the Fire Dept & First Response were hand.
One of the reasons for the celebration was to honor “retired” members
Donald Martin & Jack Sailer, as noted by Chief, Kirk Turner. It would
have been nice to recognize longtime member John Wheeler, as well, but
he & Bea Wheeler were unable to attend. The feast was prepared by Jim
Allen, with lots of help from wife, Bonnie, son Cedar & daughter, Sage;
as well as Steve & Christine Metcalf. Everyone pitched in for the clean-up!

I just learned that Wilmer & Jean Schmell’s grandson Michael & his wife
Amy of Jamaica VT had their 3rd child, Ella, born on 11/2. Their
daughter, Mary Jane Crockett & her husband, Rich still own land in
Plymouth & they are thrilled with their latest grandchild who joins
siblings, Amelia & Seamus.

I believe there may be other scholars to be recognized & hope to receive
confirmation so they can be noted next week. In the meantime,
congratulations to 7th graders Anna Hepler who made the Principal’s List
& Julia Kolwalski who made high honors. In the 8th grade, Emily Dupont
made the honor roll.

I understand that Sage Allen was on the varsity soccer team at Black
River. They had an undefeated season, which is an amazing
accomplishment, despite their defeat in a hard fought final that went to
double overtime & finally ended with a winning penalty kick by Proctor.

Tyson Church is not going to be able to sponsor the annual Thanksgiving
Day Dinner as we have for several years. In conjunction with Tyson
Ladies Aid, however, a turkey dinner is being planned for the monthly
Reach Out Luncheon that will be held on Thursday, 11/21. All those who
usually attend are most welcome & for others who would like to come,
please make a reservation by reaching either Kathy Lynds
(kathylynds@gmail.com) or Betty Aubin (484-9130) so we know how much to
prepare!

Ted & Lisa Sobieski at Red Rock Canyon, with Tom

Ted & Lisa Sobieski at Red Rock Canyon, with Tom

Well, sorry to have missed reporting last week, but we were away on vacation.  Our first stop was Las Vegas where we visited with Ted & Lisa Sobieski, who relocated out there from Plymouth about 13 years ago.  We spent a day with them at their lovely home outside the glitter of the “strip” & they took us to the Red Rock Canyon area, which was beautiful.

This was a prelude to our helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon, complete with a champagne lunch when we landed there.  We took advantage of the nightlife by seeing Human Nature, an Aussie Motown group!  From there we flew to Sacramento to visit friends, saw a play, visited the zoo, & toured the campus at Berkley.  It sounds rather hectic, but there was time for naps, a swim, plus simply sitting & chatting, too!

Thanks to Julie & Emily Dupont for assisting June Capron & Jane Wallace with the assembling of the 15 School Kits & 10 Baby Kits that were sent to Church World Service by Tyson Church.  Theresa Steward, Kathy Lynds, Carolyn Scott & Sandie Small made bags & assisted in a number of other ways.  Folks from the surrounding community also participated to help make the “We Can Make A Difference” Project a success – good work!

Condolences to the Kolwalski family on the passing of Elizabeth’s mom, Jean Eigenbrod.  Also, please note that Carroll Earle is now settled in Cedar Hill nursing facility in Windsor.

Margo Marrone’s Plymouth Report – 11/17

Republished with permission from The Vermont Standard

11/17/13

I have been alerted to a lost ring on the Tyson/Reading Rd, within ¼ mile of Rte 100, I know to whom it belongs. It has great sentimental value & a reward is being offered. Please get in touch with me if you have found it!.

It is my pleasure to announce the Eagle Scout Ceremony & Court of Honor for Ryan Blanchard to be held Sunday, 11/24 at 2:00 PM at the Coolidge Museum & Education Center. This will be a wonderful opportunity to congratulate Ryan & it is hoped that many from the community will join in this celebration.

Just catching up on birthdays & I noticed that I missed Willow Bascom on 11/2, so belated best wishes! Also, Ellen Steward was 11/8 & Miracyl Damon is 11/25.

There will be a Service of Remembrance at Tyson Church at 4:00 PM on 12/1. This is a time when we gather to remember those no longer with us during the holiday season. We will light a candle for each person & hold them in them in the light. Everyone is welcome to attend this short, but meaningful service.

10/13/13

More nice weather this weekend & judging by the crowds, lots of folks came to VT to enjoy it! We were at the Echo lake Inn for dinner on Sat evening & had a wonderful meal. The dining room will be closing after this weekend & reopening for Thanksgiving.

Tina & Bruce at the Inn at Water’s Edge are still having their $25 dinner special on Thursday evenings. The choices for this week are: grilled hanger steak with green herb sauce, chicken breast with Marsala, spinach, & fontina cheese, plus oil, garlic & lemon salmon with arugula. Be sure to make a reservation at 228-8143 to enjoy one of these wonderful meals & a glass of wine.

Don’t forget that we are into hunting season now. Tyler Pollender-Savery shot a 5 point buck this past week. Bow & arrow for deer continues through 10/27, with Youth Deer Weekend being 11/9-11/10. Regular deer season is 11/16- 12/1. Black bear season goes through 11/15 & the early turkey season goes from 11/16 – 11/24. For a complete list go to
http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/calendaritems/Seasons_List_2013.pdf

How exciting that Emily DuPont (an 8th grader at WUMS) & four of her friends from the Vermont Center for Dance Education auditioned & have been selected to be part of the Albany Berkshire Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker at The Paramount in Rutland on December 22nd. They are cast as soldiers, but they are also auditioning for the pointe shoe part of angels. Good luck!

Ian Dupont is participating in the Farm to School program, an extension of his working in the school garden this past summer. I see that Holli Olsen is adding her talent to the Girls Field Hockey team. I am sure that are many more interesting things happening in the lives of the other young people in town. Please let me know, so they can be included & cheered on!

Wonderful news that Kathy & Bob Lynds’ daughter, Elizabeth Howes & her husband David of Bally PA. completed the adoption of 6 year old Matthew on 10/2. He has been with them for some time & his official name is now Matthew Wynn Howes.

A last reminder about the Melissa Maravell concert at 7:00 PM at Tyson church on Friday, 10/18. The church is located at 39 Dublin Rd, right off Rte 100, across from the Echo Lake Inn. The concert is free, but donations are welcome & will be applied to community outreach. Refreshments will be served & we are handicapped accessible.

One of the projects that the church is sponsoring is the We Can Make a Difference program to gather School & Baby Kits for Church World Service. We appreciate the community support & will have at least 15 school & 5 baby kits, to be assembled on Sat, 10/26 at 10:00 AM downstairs at the church. We would especially like to have the young people in our area join us as we put them together & ready them for mailing.

10/7/13

Well, the leaves are falling quickly, so I hope there are some left for those visitors to our area who will coming up for the holiday weekend! The Coolidge Foundation’s 3rd Grace Coolidge Musicale will take place at the Historic Site Sunday, 10/13, from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, featuring a four hands piano program with Susan Cobb & Abigail Charbonneau. Refreshments will be served at the Wilder House following the performance.

Many places will be closing on 10/14, including our two State parks – Coolidge & Camp Plymouth. The Plymouth Cheese Factory, founded by Calvin Coolidge’s father, John will be open from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM daily until the Historic Site closes for the season, then the hours will be reduced.

Nancy at the Wilder House wants to thank everyone for their patronage. They will remain open until 10/28, so there is still time to stop in & sample their yummy food!

According to Brandon, the Bethany Birches Camp Auction raised $56,000 this year. As usual, former campers came to assist with distribution & counselors & other staff were on hand as well. For those of you unfamiliar with the camp, they emphasis the love of God & a large number of the camperships (summer & winter) are subsidized. Some of the funds will also go toward their ambitious campaign for the new pavilion, which will allow for more activities in any weather. Donations are always needed & greatly appreciated. For more information call 672-5220 or visit: camp

Tyson Church is excited about the We Can Make A Difference initiative to provide Kid‘s School Kits & Baby Care kits for Church World Services. A list of what is needed is noted in the Area Briefs or contact June Capron at 802-259-3473 or junecapron or Margo Marrone at tmmarrone for more details about how you can participate. There will be a meeting downstairs at the church on Friday 10/11 at 4:30 to assess how we are doing!

Part of the proceeds from the Melissa Maravell concert will be used for this outreach project & donated items can be brought with you to the concert at Tyson Church (across from the Echo Lake Inn) at 7:00 PM on Friday, 10/18. It should be a wonderful evening of music & refreshments will be served.
