Looking out my window on Sunday, the snow cover has been greatly diminished, but we still have plenty of it here in Plymouth! I left for a visit in NY on Friday as the rain was just starting, but I gather it was heavy and lasted quite some time. The lakes are very high. On a positive note, it did clean off my car!

I have noticed some ice fishing taking place on Echo Lake. The weather does not seem to deter the hardy enthusiasts of this sport who have been out there even during the cold spell. I understand that skiing was fantastic last Wed, but I have not had an update since the weather turned warm for a day or so and the fog and rain ate up the snow cover.

The Reading Group met this past Thursday and for the most part enjoyed reading Sisters First. The glimpses of life in the White House and some funny antidotes about Secret Service challenges sparked lively conversation. It is so enlightening to discuss a book together because we each bring a different perspective and remember different things. Our next selection is Mozart’s Starling by Lyanda Lynn Haupt, which will be discussed at our meeting on Thursday, 2/15. All are welcome!

Just a note about the Community Luncheon at Tyson Church on Thursday, 1/18. This gathering is for everyone – young, old, and in-between. The teens from Windsor Youth Services give us a helping hand. It is free, very informal, and open to all. The church pays for ingredients, so donations are accepted, although not necessary. This is not a church function, just a time and place to simply get together and enjoy each others company!  Let me know if you would like to share your culinary skills some time.

First 2018 Plymouth Reach-out Luncheon Coming Soon! — Margo’s Plymouth Report

Can’t quite get used to writing 2018 yet. We are already a week into the new year and I don’t know where those 7 days went. I suppose hibernating in the house trying to keep warm accounts for some of it!  I believe that by the time the paper comes out, temps will have warmed up.

I have noticed that many roads around town still have some snow on them. I am not sure if that contributed to the 2 or 3 accidents on the Kingdom Rd on Sunday morning. One was a FL car that slid off near the S curves. Having driven that road to work in Windsor for years, I know that you really have to be careful and go slowly coming down the hill. Fortunately, I don’t believe anyone was seriously hurt.

The Reading Group will meet this Thursday, 1/11 at 6:30 at the Community Center. We will be discussing Sisters First by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush. Anyone can join us, even if you haven’t read it.  We have lots of laughs!

I understand that there will be a gathering at 10:00 AM this Saturday, 1/13 at the Community Center for youngsters and their families. This has taken place periodically for some time and they do invite others to join them.

There will be a Community Luncheon downstairs at Tyson Church on 1/18 at 11:30. Thanks to Michelle Pingree for offering to make 2 kinds of lasagna – one with meat and the other without. There will be salad, Italian bread, and cookies with ice cream. We are pleased to have Cassie Horner for our speaker, who will tell us more about the Rutland Magazine. This should be a nice way to meet neighbors, share a meal, and enjoy some lively conversation!

There is always lots of midwinter fun for kids at Bethany Birches’ Snow Camp!

12/22/17

Again as write it is snowing! Of course this submission is early, on Friday because of the Holiday. Perhaps this is going to be a real VT winter, hopefully with gentle snow like today and not rain with ice. Despite my knee surgery scheduled for 2/20, I did go out and plod around on my snowshoes the other day, without any more pain than usual!

The New Year is nearly upon us and the daylight hours are lengthening. That always makes me feel better – hopeful because a few more rays of sun and vitamin D can help to raise my spirits.

There has been discussion lately about setting up a ping pong table at the Community Center in order to have some indoor fun and friendly competitive games. So, if you are interested, please contact Tom (228-5114) or Justine (802-251-0155)

Speaking of fun, although this entails a great deal of delightful outdoor activity, consider snow camp at Bethany Birches.

Bobcat (Grades 3-6) will take place February 9-11, Polar Bear (Grades 7-9) on March 9-11, Lynx A (Grades 4-7) from February 17-20, and Lynx B (Grades 3-6) on February 24-27. There is tiered pricing, so check out their website or call 672-5220 for more information. There is also a wonderful free Family Fun Day for all ages on February 3rd!

There have been some changes regarding our eating establishments. Paul and Tad are no longer operating their pub at the Salt Ash Inn. Also, the Echo Lake Inn is having some temporary staffing issues and is not currently open for dinner. They hope to remedy that situation soon. However, the Inn at Water’s Edge (228-8143) is still serving and having their specials on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Welcome Simon James Bergey! — Margo’s Plymouth Report

As I write this on Monday morning, I see flurries outside my window. I am hoping it doesn’t change to rain, which will than lead to ice! Hope that everyone is prudent and safe these days.

A wonderful welcome to Simon James Bergey, son of Amber and Brandon, who arrived on Thursday morning, 12/14. I hope that Susie is excited about her new brother, too!

Although it was a small group, the lighting of the Memory Tree was very nice. There were goodies in the Community Center and music by Midge that made it festive. A few youngsters added a lively touch as well!

The weather cooperated nicely on Sunday evening, bringing 70 or so people to attend our Community Candlelight Service. It was nice to see some new faces. The children were enthralled by the story read by Cheryl Bishop. It was such a treat to have John Hennelly and Fred Muzer perform the Cloverton version of Christmas Hallelujah, which so nicely tells the Christmas story. They also provided some entertainment downstairs during our social time!

So, may everyone have a blessed Christmas and Holiday season.

Community Christmas Season Events — Margo’s Plymouth Report

Ah, the white stuff has arrived! We didn’t have to drive anywhere last evening, but we did walk to our neighbor, Shaw Bemis’ festively decorated home for a marvelous Christmas party and it was so lovely to be out in the falling snow. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were always so light and fluffy!

This time of year is great for visiting with folks. It was a superb luncheon at the Public House Restaurant in Quechee where the VT Standard gathered correspondents last Thursday. Thanks for a delightful meal and lively conversation.

Don’t forget the happenings at the Community Center on Saturday, 12/16 starting at 2:30 with the movie and refreshments, as well as time at the Historical Society, plus the Memory Tree lighting at 4:00 PM

Then round out the weekend by planning to come to the Annual Community Candlelight Service at 7:00 PM on 12/17 at Tyson Church. Cheryl Bishop will be reading a story for the children and John Hennelly will be performing Christmas Hallelujah, which so wonderfully tells the Christmas story. This will be another opportunity to mingle with folks as we gather downstairs in the Community Room to share some goodies following the service.

Plymouth Holiday Celebration & Memory Tree Lighting 12/16

The entire community is invited to enjoy a Holiday gathering at The Plymouth Community Center starting at 2:30pm on December 16th. A family friendly Christmas movie will be shown in the Activity Room. Cookies, juice, coffee and tea will be served. There may be some Christmas Caroling as well!

The Plymouth Schoolhouse Childcare will have open doors for children to play in the classroom and families to visit the program. The Plymouth Historical Society will also be open for visitors. At 4pm the Plymouth Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on the front lawn of the The Community Center to conclude the celebrations. Come join the fun!

The Plymouth Memory Tree provides aid to Plymouth residents and the board thanks the community and all who have made a gift to date this year. View a list of 2017 memorials (as of 12/7)

Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony and Candlelight Service Scheduled — Margo’s Plymouth Report

The weather remains amazing with so little snow and fairly warm temps, although by the time this is published, the forecast is calling for rain and snow. We know it is coming!

I imagine that by the time of the Memory Tree Lighting Ceremony at 4:00 PM on Saturday, 12/16 takes place, the ground may be seasonably white at the Community Center. Everyone is invited to come at 2:30 to view a Christmas movie shown in the Activity Room, where cookies, juice, coffee and tea will be served. Bring your voice to join in the Christmas caroling as well! This time will also provide an opportunity for children to play in the classroom at the Plymouth Schoolhouse Childcare and for others to peruse the Plymouth Historical Society exhibits.

To continue the community theme for the entire weekend, consider attending the Annual Community Candlelight Service at 7:00 PM on 12/17 at Tyson Church. This year we will have special music by John Hennelly performing Christmas Hallelujah, plus a children’s story. The singing of Christmas carols including Silent Night with the lighting of candles all around the sanctuary with close our service, but plan to come downstairs to share cookies and finger food with us.

Although a week early, I don’t want to forget to congratulate Betty Ann and Bob Hayward on their 50th wedding anniversary coming up on 12/16

Coolidge Holidays, Tyson Church Advent Season, WUHS performance: Early December in Plymouth! — Margo’s Plymouth Report

That was quite a mini-blizzard at 8:00 AM this past Sunday morning – a reminder of things to come! Anyway, it seemed fitting as we decorated the church for Advent and Christmas. This coming week we will be focusing on anticipation and hope at our 10:30 Worship service. At 5:00 PM we will be having our Service of Remembrance when we will light candles for those we are missing during this Holiday season.

Mark your calendars for the Coolidge Holiday Open House on Saturday, 12/2, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Join in the fun of Christmas past – the way it used to be. Steve Morse will entertain with holiday organ and piano music throughout the day and lead caroling at the Union Christian Church at 1:30 pm. Add to your fun by making a “Great Winter Hat” and possibly winning a prize at 3:00 pm. There are so many activities that I can’t name them all! Will there be sleigh or wagon rides?  Not only will there be craft demonstrations, but young and young-at-heart alike can make wonderful things to bring home. Chocolate and cheese samples will tantalize your taste buds, and a variety of soups and chili prepared by Tyson Ladies Aid will warm you up at the Wilder House.

You can enjoy a wonderful WUHS performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Friday, 12/1 at 7pm, Saturday, 12/2 at 7pm, or Sunday, 12/3 at 3pm.   Come see local Plymouth talent: Anna Hepler as a Vulgarian spy, Julia Kowalski as the Child Catcher and Junkman, and Eve Cole as the Baroness, with posters by Ian Dupont. Tickets are $10/adults and $5/students and seniors.

The Book Group has decided to read Sisters First by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush. Plan to join us to discuss it on Thursday, 1/11 at 6:30 pm at the Community Center. A belated happy birthday (11/26) to Julia Pierson, who is currently residing at the Gill Home.
