Village Harmony Community Concerts Coming Right Up!

Village Harmony will be singing on Wednesday, June 29 at the Shrewsbury Town Hall and Thursday, June 30 at the Rochester Community Center, both at 7:30pm.

Based in Vermont, Village Harmony is dedicated to the study & performance of traditional polyphonic singing and sponsors an extensive program of traveling singing camps for teenagers and adults across the globe. Each group meets for a week-long rehearsal retreat before going on the road for a concert tour.

Village Harmony has been a place where teenagers who don’t follow the beaten path have been able to come together and experience the sheer power of making music as a community with their peers.

Summer Has Arrived in Plymouth!

6/15/16

Well, it seems like summer has arrived.  An exciting day spent at Montshire Museum recently by two grandmothers and four little ones – 5 and under.  Exhausting, but fun.  When I told Owen that I can’t wait until he is old enough to drive so I can nap on the way home, he said, “Mimi, you will have a long time to wait.”

Speaking of children, don’t forget that Tyson Library (open Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM to noon, and the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 6 -7 PM) has free or reduced fee passes for several places.  Check to see if there is one available on a day that you want to go!

  • Wonderfeet, the children’s play place in Rutland – free for 2 adults, 3 children.
  • Billings Farm pass for 2 adults and their children.
  • The Echo Museum in Burlington offers $4 each admission for 4 guests.
  • VT Historic Site day pass for 8 people in 1 vehicle.
  • VT State Park day pass for 8 people in 1 vehicle.

Brandon at Bethany Birches Camp mentioned that some sessions are working with a waiting list, but others are not yet full.  Feel free to call the office at 802-672- 5220 or go to http://www.bethanybirches.org/register-now/ to learn more.  Two Owens from Tyson Church will be attending the day camp – Owen Bishop and Owen Perrino!

Please note that this month’s Children’s Sunday at Tyson Congregational Church will be 6/26.

If you need child care in town or simply want a special learning experience for your youngster, consider Lauren Skaskiw’s program at the Plymouth Schoolhouse.  Contact her at  www.literacyfundamentals.org or by calling 802 855 7566.  She is continually upgrading the classroom and outdoor play area and she is licensed to take children ages one year and up.   And by the way, congratulations, Lauren on becoming the new Plymouth Schoolhouse Director.

Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey is the selection for the 6/30 gathering of the Reading Group.  I guess I had better get reading……

Strawberry Festival, 2015

Strawberry Festival, 2015

6/5/16

Well, so much information to impart for the holiday weekend, that I just couldn’t get it together for an early submission last week.  Perhaps you didn’t even notice!   It is Sunday afternoon as I write and the rain is watering the earth.  No doubt about the fact that we need it.  You can practically hear the plants and trees cheering as they become soaked!

Our condolences to Nancy Yale’s family on her sudden passing.  It was a very nice time of remembrance on the lawn behind the Wilder House on 5/30.  She will certainly be missed.  Although it will not be the same without Nancy, hopefully it will work out to have the restaurant open back up for the season.

Graduation is upon us and will take place on Friday, 6/10 at Woodstock Union High School.  Congratulations to the four graduates from Plymouth: Marah Adams, Ryan Blanchard, Ian Dupont and Grace Vosburgh.   From what I understand, there are not any seniors from Plymouth this year at Black River High School.

Just to let you know that Emily Dupont will be performing in the 6/12 ballet recital of The Little Mermaid, at the Paramount Theater in Rutland, Vermont.  Shows are 1:00 and 6:00 PM.

June is a big birthday month around here.  Sorry if my list is not complete, but let me know if I have missed someone.  Sue Poirier (6/4)  Tom Marrone (6/6),  Sally Markwell (6/9),  Doris Earle, Matt Harootunian, Theresa Steward, and me on 6/14, Georgianna Whalen (6/26)

President Calvin and First Lady Grace Coolidge

Please make note of the permanent exhibit at the Historic Site entitled, More Than Two Words: The Life and Legacy of Calvin Coolidge.  It is a fun and interactive presentation containing objects, photographs, newsreels, political cartoons, and the amazing work of Jim Cooke, the re-enactor acclaimed for his sensitive and insightful portrayal of the 30th U.S. president.  Don’t miss it!

As Summer Arrives, Plymouth is Ripe with Activities! — Margo’s Plymouth Report

Reprinted by permission of The Vermont Standard

5/22/16

With the warmer weather things are budding and not just the trees!  So much going on that I barely know where to start and I fear I will be leaving out some events and organizations.  If I do, please let me know, so I can remedy the situation.

After church on Sunday Tom and I took items over to the Community Center for the Town-wide Antiques and Treasures Sale that will take place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.  One of the 8 foot church benches that are for sale will be there on display.  Make sure to check it out – you might find something you didn’t know you need!

The President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site opens for the 2016 season on Saturday, 5/28, with a new temporary exhibit –Expressions of Esteem: The Coolidge Presidential Gifts.  Many objects have never been on display and are on loan from the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum in Northampton, Massachusetts.  Be on alert, however, because the Killington Stage Race will mean many cyclists speeding through the area!   Also, Bill Jenney (672-3773) tells me that they are seeking seasonal employees to be tour guides for this summer and fall, so if you enjoy working with the public, give him a call.

Many venues are opening for the season, including Wilder House, where you can have breakfast or lunch right there in the Notch.  For your reading pleasure, Tyson Library (one of the smallest and oldest in Vermont) will also open 5/28 with a book sale.   It is located on Library Trail, off Dublin Rd – behind Tyson Church.  Hours will be Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM to noon and the 1st and 3rd Mondays from 6 -7 PM.

Also, the Historical Society Museum will now be open on Saturdays from 12-2 PM throughout the summer or by making an appointment by calling 802-438-8351.  Please note the correct date for the Irene documentary is Saturday, 8/27 at 7 PM at the Coolidge Historic Site.

The first of the 2016 Grace Coolidge Musicales in the Great Room [at the Coolidge Education Center] will be Sunday, May 29 at 4:00 PM.  The concert is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.  This concert will feature “Songs from the Home Front,” with Abigail Charbeneau (piano) and Ellen Nordstrom (mezzo-soprano), as a patriotic and cultural tribute to our veterans and their loved ones.  Refreshments follow at the Wilder House Restaurant.

Join together with other volunteers on 5/28 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM for the Spring Work Day at Bethany Birches Camp in order to turn the pavilion from a construction zone into an exciting summer camp!  Various skill levels are needed and lunch will be provided.  Lodging is available here at the camp for anyone who wants to come from a distance or make a weekend of it!   You can email amber@bethanybirches to let them know you plan to help.  Be sure to go to the website for information on the camping programs and note that there will be several sessions of day camp this year, too!

Both of our State Parks in town will be opening on Friday, 5/27.  Mark your calendars for the Annual Plymouth Strawberry Festival that takes place at Camp Plymouth on Wednesday, 6/22.  Emergency Services does the BBQ, Tyson Ladies Aid does the strawberry shortcake, and Tyson Church does the raffle.  Some donations for the raffle from local businesses and individuals have already been given and others are currently being solicited, so that the prize list will be extensive again this year!   All proceeds go into our Community Outreach Fund to meet various needs in our area, such as:  food for the monthly Reach Out Luncheon, camp scholarships, gas cards for medical travel, help with fuel and utilities, etc.
