Lots of Plymouth news! ~ Margo’s Report

2/15/19

It seems like February is flying by! It is definitely still winter, however. Even this morning (Friday) as I write, snow is falling. Beware of the ice under the snow!

Our annual Town Meeting will be Monday, 3/4 at the Town Building, which will provide an opportunity to review the Town budget and discuss other important town issues. The Town Report will be available by the end of next week. Copies will be mailed, you can pick up one at the Town office or it should be available at the Town website, too. Voting by Australian ballot will take place the following day, 3/5. Absentee ballots may be obtained, but make sure to follow the directions carefully, since I understand that some could not be counted last year because of errors.

Join other local folks at the Community Luncheon in the basement meeting room at Tyson church on Thursday, 2/21 at 11:30 for fun, food, and interesting facts! Also, that evening at 6:30 the Book Group will meet at the Community Center to discuss Go Ask Fannie by Elisabeth Hyde. Feel free to attend even if you have not read the book and help us to choose the next selection.

At the Tyson Ladies Aid meeting on Thursday, plans were set for upcoming events, such as the Good Friday bake sale in the Shaws shopping center and a planned spaghetti dinner in May – details to follow.  You can see from these pictures that meetings are very solemn and serious!

It is so nice to hear about the interesting things happening with our young people. I imagine the some of you read in last week’s VT Standard that WUHS Senior, Anna Hepler was recently honored with a Presidential Scholar nomination at the VT statehouse for her academic and personal achievement. She also gave a wonderful presentation last Sunday at Bethany Mennonite Church about her recent trip to South Africa as part of Village Harmony. Along with 30 others from the US, Canada, and the UK, they visited with families, learned about the culture, performed and learned many local songs. Along with others in the congregation, she shared some of the music, which is a very special part of the culture over there.

I would love to include information about other youth in our town, so feel free to send me some!

Valentine Menu @ The Echo Lake Inn! ~ Margo’s Report

Reprinted with permission of The Vermont Standard

2/8/19

There were a couple of days this past week that I thought Punxsutawney Phil might have been correct, that spring was not far away. I enjoyed a lovely walk the other day and there almost seemed to be a warm breeze. Tom and I ventured out this afternoon, but instead there was a harsh, cold wind that moved us briskly along!

Speaking of that infamous groundhog, I can’t wait to hear the fun facts that Dana Dolloff will unearth and present at the Community Luncheon on Thursday, 2/21. There will be a special chicken dish, rice, veggies, and dessert, so consider joining the party at 11:30 AM in the Community Room at Tyson Church. Please enter through the parking lot and tread carefully.

Well, Valentine’s Day is coming up on the 14th and The Echo Lake Inn (802-228-8602) is offering a Valentine’s special for $89/couple from 2/13-17.  It includes soup or salad, a small plate, a large plate, and dessert; along with champagne.  Also, the Inn at Water’s Edge (802-228-8143)  has weekly Thursday night specials of a 4 course meal for $25 per person including a glass of wine. Call for additional information and reservations, then enjoy!

Our condolences go out to Larry Miller and Justine Jefferys on the recent passing of his mom.

Ground Hog Day & Super Bowl weekend~ Margo’s Report

2/1/19

As I write, the new month is upon us with lots of exciting happenings, such as Ground Hog Day and the Super Bowl coming our way! Who knows what the outcome will be with either of these events, but by the time this goes to print, both will have been decided.

These cold days have at least been made more tolerable by the bright sunshine and blue skies. However, there was a mini-blizzard in Rutland on Wed when we were heading home around 5:00 PM. We were able to visit briefly with Bill Jarvi at the Meadows, and his lovely smile continues to warm my heart.

I don’t know if there is not much going on or if I am simply out of the loop, but the only upcoming event I have noted is the Community luncheon one 2/15. More details will follow.

I did receive an email that indicated Calvin Coolidge was featured on a commemorative coin in 1926 to mark the 150th anniversary of American independence. The half dollar coin had Coolidge and Washington on the front. Can any history buffs confirm this information?

An icy week in Plymouth~ Margo’s Report

1/25/19

As I write this on Friday, the long day of rain has passed and left us with a thick glaze of ice. But, the sun is out and the snow is sparkling. Just make sure to wear your ice gripers, though!

This winter weather has made driving hazardous at times and the number of recent vehicle accidents is a bit alarming. Not long ago log truck apparently careened off Lynds Hill and just this morning a car ended up down in the gully off Tyson/Reading Road. From what I can gather, the occupants were able to get out and hopefully that means they were not seriously hurt. That was hours ago and they are still working to extract the car, so the road has been closed for some time.

I don’t seem to have much news this week. Tom & I attended an interesting program the other evening in Cavendish about foxes. It was presented by the Southern VT Natural History Museum from West Marlboro, located near Molly Stark State Park. They have live animals at their facility, in addition to many exhibits. This sounds like a great place to take the boys during winter break – weather permitting!

Speaking of my grandsons, the next Community Lunch happens during vacation week (2/21), so I will need help planning & carrying out this event. Please let me know if you are able to help….

A weekend of falling snow~ Margo’s Report

1/18/19

I am writing this as the storm is heading eastward threatening us with massive amounts of snow! At least we are better prepared than many places south of us where they don’t even have snow plows!

Perhaps some of you recall when Echo Lake had a large ice fishing conclave. Over the years that has diminished, although a couple of weeks ago I was concerned to see a few folks on the lake when there was water on top of the ice and several areas of open water. Well, the frigid weather has quelled any fears and now some ice houses have appeared. These hardy souls amaze me!

There was a large crowd for the Community Luncheon on 1/17 and our speaker was Tom, talking about what Listers do. In his usual comic fashion, he noted some history he had researched. Years ago they had included in the assessment as taxable items, watches (not made of wood) and a swarm of bees!

The Reading Group discussion of he Late Bloomers’ Club by Louise Miller was fun as usual, especially since it involved a small VT town and presented the happenings at a Town Meeting. We were surprised by a visit from a State Trooper who was in the area and decided to see what was going on! At the next meeting on Thursday, 2/21 we will be discussing Go Ask Fannie by Elisabeth Hyde. This book is not from the Killington library, so readers need to find their own copies.

On Sunday January 27th, yoga with Dawn is to start up again 10:30 AM at the Plymouth Community Center. The cost is $10 per class and all levels are welcome.

Remember there is delicious food available right here in town! The Echo Lake Inn (228-8602) is serving dinner Wed through Sunday. The Inn at Waters Edge (228-8143) is again offering their Italian Thursday 4 course specials, as well as Friday evening meal.winter-at-the-inn
